Misano Approaches For WorldSSP Riders

The busy start to the 2021 FIM Supersport World Championship will continue at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli for the Kawasaki Puccetti Racing squad. Regular team riders Philipp Öttl and Can Öncü will compete in the third round of the championship between 11-13 June.

After a strong debut season in the WorldSSP class last year Öttl feels in good shape to challenge all the way to the series finale in 2021. His positive early form has seen him take three podiums and one DNF from four race starts, putting him into third place in the championship standings.

Öncü has seen a swing in his fortunes during the early 2021 races but three points scoring race finishes position him 13th overall in the championship rankings. His most recent result of seventh in Race Two at Estoril was a glimpse of the 17 year-old Turkish rider’s true potential. He was just over five seconds behind the race winner.

The 4.226km long Misano circuit has been the scene of recent WorldSSP race wins for the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, in 2016 and 2017. There was no Misano race in 2020 due to Pandemic restrictions, making the return to the coastal circuit a particularly happy one for all concerned.

There will be two WorldSSP races at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli this coming weekend with Race One on Saturday 12 June and Race Two on Sunday 13 June.

After Misano there will be no WorldSSP races at the Donington Park round of WorldSSP with Assen hosting the fourth round, between 23-25 July.

Philipp Öttl, stated: “I’ve scored three podiums in the previous races, but still need to reach the highest step of the rostrum. It would be fantastic if I could do it Misano, the team’s home race. I’ll do my very best. I’m very pleased with the way the team’s working and with the competitiveness of my bike. I’m sure that if we carry on this way, we can achieve significant results.”

Can Öncü, stated: “I’m really excited to be able to race at Misano. After the two Estoril races, we’re now on the right path to greater competitiveness, and so I can’t wait to get back to work with my technicians and be back on my ZX-6R. I know this is the team’s home round and this gives me added motivation to work hard and score the best possible results.”

Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura Kawasaki) has had variable fortunes at the start of the 2021 season - his first WorldSSP year on a Kawasaki - but his high point so far was a second place finish at the opening round in Spain.

Michel Fabrizio (Motozoo Puccetti Racing Kawasaki) is already a points scorer in his return to competitive action while Leonardo Taccini (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) and Shogo Kawasaki (Motozoo Puccetti Racing) have yet to score in the first two rounds.
